A dead newborn orca has been found on a Dungeness Spit beach on Washington's Olympic Peninsula.

PORT TOWNSEND, Wash. (AP) — A wildlife biologist says a dead newborn orca has been found on a Dungeness Spit beach on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula.
The Seattle Times reports that the 7 ½-foot-long male calf’s body was taken to Seattle so DNA testing can tell scientists whether it was a transient or resident orca.
Brad Hanson works for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center. He says the calf found Monday had been dead for a day or two.
Experts will also try to determine whether the whale was born alive.
The nonprofit Orca Network is looking for anyone who might have taken photos of orcas in Puget Sound waters on Sunday since those images might help determine where the calf came from.
